For our final Dpercussion 2005 recap (part 9) we turn to Stazi, who were by far the most unusual act at last year’s festival. A man dressed in a Russian spandex leotard and gimp mask, plenty of audience participation and recent X-Factor (and Happy Mondays) star Rowetta onstage made for some interesting viewing :)
Stephen Fretwell is another in a long line of artists that have settled in Manchester and become adopted Mancunians (see Nine Black Alps, The Longcut, Keith etc). This singer-songwriter from Scunthorpe has been playing the Manchester circuit for several years… anyone that saw him back in 2003 couldn’t have failed to recognise this guy would eventually breakthrough to the mainstream. Indeed he acomplished this last year with his tunes ‘Emily’ and ‘New York’, thanks to plenty of Radio One airplay and a re-release of his debut album Magpie
Stephen Fretwell played the DPercussion Main Stage last year, and below is part 8 of our DPercussion 2005 recap (although I only managed to take a couple of quick snaps at the side of the stage):
Nine Black Alps are a band I’ve followed right from the very beginning… all the way from their very first gig back in December 2003 for Akoustik Anarkhy at the Piccadilly Gardens Hotel (I’ll upload my photos from this show eventually). It’s great to see them doing so well and building up a following in the States.
Twelve months ago (and our Manchester DPercussion 2005 recap part 6) Nine Black Alps played the main stage at the festival. I think they were on pretty early as I hadn’t been able to get hold of my photo pass in time… instead I took a few shots from the audience
